Subtle like a T-Rex

I wish Ambellina would brush herself. She likes to run figure 8s around my ankles, which means that my jeans are covered in fur.

When Pompeii was being excavated, the archaeologists found cavities in the ash layer where bodies had decomposed after being buried by the ash. They filled the spaces and made concrete casts of the shapes; four perfectly formed bodies were made in this way. You can see the way they died, trying to cover their faces and not breathe the poisonous fumes. I think the saddest one is the dog.

This is Pompeii. My sister and I took a tour with a guide who was convinced that the Romans were stronger than us, which is why they could survive in a city with lead pipes. He didn’t mention how short their lives were. Kinda funny in restrospect.

Anyway, I couldn’t get over how huge Pompeii was. When you hear about a place that’s been covered in volcanic ash and uncovered, somehow you think that it’s a smallish town, a few streets and maybe some civic buildings. You don’t realise that it’s an entire city, quite intact despite the years. It’s pretty phenomenal.

Castel Nuovo, in Naples, Italy. I hated Naples, but there were still some interesting things to see. And there were cats.

Wouldn’t mind doing this right now. Sort of reminds me of that time my sister Jayne and I were in Kiruna (far nothern Sweden; it’s inside the Arctic circle!) and I was just jumping headfirst into epic snowdrifts. So, so much fun.
